A few days ago, I attended the emergency department with my young child (I was referred from health direct). My child had a 38.2 temp, headache, tummy ache and vomiting. We were taken through to a room where a nurse did observation a couple of times then we were left.
I rang the bell as my child needed to wee and I was unsure if I needed a sample. I waited about 10 minutes and no one came so I helped myself to a sample jar and got a sample. About 10 more minutes passed and a nurse finally came to see what was wrong. I asked if they needed a urine sample but they had no idea so I said I got one and gave them the urine sample. They tested it and said it looked like a uti but to wait for the doctor. When the doctor finally arrived they walked in and said my child looked fine and nothing was wrong. I questioned about the urine sample and they said nothing showed up and sent us home saying nothing was wrong and it was probably just viral.
Lucky I decided to get a second opinion the next day and took my child to a different doctor who confirmed that they did have a uti and was started on antibiotics straight away. To say I was angry/disappointed is an understatement.
