"Postnatal care - in particular the physio dept"

About: Royal Hospital for Women / Maternity Services Division

(as the patient),

Royal Hospital for Women have rolled out an, in my opinion, fantastic initiative for postnatal mums. The physio dept (Guilia) invites new mums to a series of insightful physio-led postpartum webinars - one shortly after birth, a second 6 weeks postpartum and a third 12 weeks postpartum.

The relevant information is tailored depending on how many weeks postpartum, and provided in the, I feel, convenience of a webinar (knowing how difficult it is to get out of the house with a newborn/young baby). A text message is sent automatically to Mum, inviting her to participate online. It is an interactive session with an experienced physio. Genius.

And although I attended the prenatal physiotherapy webinar (which, I believe, was as important and had a lot of info relating to the prenatal stage), the postnatal information doesn’t truly hit home for a Mum until after the baby is born and the body’s changes are noticeable. In my opinion, the timing is of the postnatal webinar is therefore perfect.

I believe this initiative is amazing, and I’d hope to see it roll out across NSW/nationally. I feel it is a fantastic support for new mums who have many questions about their bodies following birth, “what’s normal, what isn’t, what should I look out for”, and it is a safe space to ask those questions that might otherwise not be asked in a physical group setting.

It has given me the confidence to book a postpartum pelvic floor check when I felt things were not as they seemed, whereas otherwise I’d never have had the confidence to do so. Thank you to the RHW physio dept.

In my opinion, this is a wonderful support for postnatal women, empowering us with knowledge and making the whole process accessible and easy! I believe we need more of these!

Dear learningzr83,

My name is Maxine and I am the Quality Manager for the Royal Hospital for Women. I was touched to read your story that helped me to better understand the impact this program has had on you and influenced your decision to seek help when it was needed.

We are currently reforming our Consumer Groups and I wondered if you would like to be a part of this? The groups will run in different packages and if you are interested, we can send you a package on what’s involved. If you are interested in finding out more about this invitation, would you please contact Victoria Walton on 9382 6846 or email to Victoria.walton@health.nsw.gov.au? Victoria would welcome your contact and the opportunity to speak with you about this.

I hope your little one is bringing you much joy and you are adjusting well to being a Mum.

Kind regards,

Maxine
