"Lack of care during pregnancy"

About: Hedland Health Campus / Maternity Unit Newman Hospital

(as the patient),

Living in the Pilbara I had my first midwife appointment at 26 weeks. I felt everything leading up to this midwife appointment had gone bad. I’d seen 2 doctors in Newman, neither measured the baby’s heart or growth. I had to ring Port Hedland and beg for help and to get in with a midwife as I hadn’t received adequate care in Newman.

Finally, I saw a midwife where they went through the booklet that I believe should’ve been filled out from 8 weeks. They told me in that appointment that if I have any troubles, ring Port Hedland maternity straight away, as Newman’s hospital number isn’t even printed on the book due to the lack of maternity services. I had worries about baby’s movements so I called the number and had, I felt, an extremely rude midwife ask as I recalled, doesn’t Newman have a midwife, and offered me no help. I went to the ED in Newman where I received care and got sent for a scan.

My whole pregnancy I’ve felt helpless and lonely. All I want is for someone in a medical role to care. I even applied to go to a hospital in Perth to have birth as that was my choice and got told no because where I was staying in Perth didn’t come under the catchment even though my residential address is Newman. Based on my experience, so disappointed with the public system especially being a hard-working taxpayer.

Dear bracewe64,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent experiences with staff at Newman Hospital and the Hedland Health Campus. I am very concerned to read that you have been left feeling helpless and lonely. This is not the consumer experience we aim to achieve, particularly during such an important time in your life for your healthcare and wellbeing. While I am pleased to hear you subsequently received care at the Newman Hospital Emergency Department, I would like to ensure that you are receiving the appropriate care and continuing support you need at this time - please feel welcome to contact me, Sarah Hennings – A/Operations Manager Inland Pilbara on 08 9175 8333 or sarah.hennings@health.wa.gov.au.

I want to reassure you that we will address your experience with our Medical Officers and Nursing staff to reinforce our values by demonstrating compassion, empathy and providing a high level of quality of care to all of our consumers. We’ve also recently employed a midwife at Newman Hospital to support the antenatal and postnatal phases of pregnancy. This was in response to extensive consultation with the women of Newman, and I would encourage you to be a part of the ongoing consultations for that service. I can put you in contact with the service lead if you want to contact me. I will also be working closely with the Regional Director of Nursing & Midwifery and providing your feedback, including the advice you received regarding attending Perth for the birth of your child, to ensure it is addressed by the Inland maternity services project.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Sarah Hennings
