"Antenatal class"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Maternity Unit, Childbirth & Parenting Education

(as a service user),

We attended the Busselton Health Campus antenatal day last month. It was a full day, it used to be over multiple days but has been changed due to COVID-19.

I feel it would be better if it was spread out over multiple days again, as I felt there was a lot of information to take in and absorb.

I also feel a lot more could have been covered. I believe no mention was made of what would happen if you ended up having a LUSCS (33% of births in Australia are by Caesarean).

I also feel like there was not much information about any intervention, just brief overviews, and in my opinion, it was stated in a negative way, that interventions were a bad thing. Not everyone has a positive, natural, intervention-free birth, and that is okay.

Also, I feel like breastfeeding and taking the baby home could have been covered more. I have felt throughout this entire pregnancy that the system needs to change and better information and resources need to be available for new parents. I believe more care is needed in the antenatal stage as it is a huge life change for people.

Dear bonanzanf64,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback regarding our Antenatal Classes. Your feedback is very much appreciated.

I am sorry that we were unable to fulfil your expectations and hope to make improvements from your comments.

I am happy to say that we are currently reviewing our classes as we have also found the session to be very long with the information required to give to our women and partners.

We will be making changes to our Saturday session times and will be commencing weekly evening sessions starting in September 2021.

The content of our classes will also be reviewed, and your comments will be provided to our working party to ensure all subjects are provided in a positive format.

The positive birth programme through WACHS-SW offers breastfeeding and early parenting education which is available online if you wish to book to further support your journey.

I am happy for any further feedback if you wish to contact me by phone on 08 97536131 or Email karen.swallow2@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you again for your feedback.

With Kind Regards,

Karen Swallow. CNM Maternity Busselton

Dear bonanzanf64,

I would like to thank you again for providing feedback to us regarding our Antenatal classes.

I am pleased to say that we have reformatted our classes and we now have weekly evening classes, and our weekend class have now been divided into 2 sessions.

This has enabled us to reduce the numbers attending and to format the classes to cover subjects appropriately including unexpected outcomes assisted birth and caesarean.

Within this format, we will cover expectations when going home with a new baby.

We are evaluating each class to continually improve our service.

Thank you again, if you would like to contact me with any further information please do not hesitate in calling me on 08 9753 6131.

Karen Swallow CNM Maternity Busselton.
