"COVID-19 testing clinic - 'lost' pathology sample"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I made an inquiry to Sydney Hospital COVID-19 testing clinic regarding the result from my COVID test undertaken at the hospital in which I was verbally advised that the pathology sample was ‘’lost’’. It appears that, as I had not received the result from the COVID test, it was only a result of my inquiry that the hospital became aware that the pathology sample had been lost. This was following their consultation with another hospital that were undertaking analyses, apparently.

On several occasions, I requested the hospital to advise where it was, within their policy process, that the system failed and ‘’lost’’ the pathology sample. The language regarding the lost pathology sample has now become ‘’unable to locate’’. Either way, I feel the hospital has excused the failure of their system and have not provided a rationally persuasive explanation as to what led to the pathology sample being lost.

It took the hospital 16 days to write to me and still have not responded to my inquiry.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience when attending our COVID -19 Assessment Clinic. I am sorry that your COVID test was lost and that your experience was not a positive one.

We consistently seek feedback from both our staff and patients in an effort to improve our COVID-19 testing service. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us through the Care Opinion site and as a result of recent feedback, we have reviewed our policy processes for the collection and transportation of COVID-19 testing swabs to the pathology. I can assure you that Sydney Hospital/Sydney Eye Hospital takes the well-being of our patients very seriously and we are committed to continuously improving our service.
