"ED visit 32 weeks pregnant"

About: Plantagenet Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had sudden onset pain in my chest that radiated through to my right shoulder blade and up my neck while at home. I did my blood pressure and it was high for pregnancy. Called maternity at a particular hospital (Hospital A) they said to go to Barker (Plantagenet Hospital) to get cleared before making the drive to Hospital A.

So we did. My parent came with me. We pressed the call button 3 times with no answer, finally the last call was answered, we had waited out in the cold weather for about 15 minutes. Once let into waiting room I recall I was addressed by, why are you here. I explained that maternity from Hospital A told me to come here first and that they would call. I felt the nurse rudely said, why are you here then, we don’t do babies we don’t know much about it. This made myself and parent second guess actually stopping in to Mount Barker (Plantagenet Hospital) to be checked over.

Finally got taken through to ED room where they were, I believe, clearly short staffed and, I felt, left it till the last minute to call in the on call nurse. Finally, this is when things started happening. Was later transferred to Hospital A by ambulance for further investigation and at the time of writing this story I remain upon maternity ward pending tests.

Dear ospreyey74,

I am very sorry that you experienced a delay in accessing the Plantagenet Cranbrook Health Service and that you were made to feel unsure about your decision to attend the hospital. This is not how we would normally treat our patients and I would really like to understand what happened to you.

My name is Julie Hollingworth and I am the Director of Nursing/ Health Service Manager at the hospital. I would be grateful if you could give me a call on 0428 481 201 so I can offer you my apologies directly and talk to you about what happened so that we can learn from your experience and ensure that it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Julie Hollingworth | Director of Nursing – Health Service Manager/ Plantagenet Cranbrook Health Service
