"My baby's burn"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

During a recent camping trip, my child who’s a toddler, pulled a boiling cup of tea on themselves. We immediately took them to the nearby hospital and received excellent first care there. The doctor and nurses helped us to cool the burn in the shower and sent photos of the burn to Perth Children’s Hospital. It was decided we would need to get up there and they organised the royal flying doctor to take us.

Unfortunately, this fell through time and time again so eventually, with our full support, we decided to get on an ambulance to Bunbury, with the plan to get another ambulance to Perth when available. I knew it would be a horrible night but I just wanted to be up in Perth where they could care for my child as well as possible.

Once in Bunbury, unfortunately, they were extremely understaffed and felt like my child had been ‘palmed off’ on them (and let me know this!!) which made me feel horrible. We were there for a few hours before an ambulance could come to take us to Perth. Once we were in Perth, we were there for 5 nights and everyone there was top notch.

Dear importerhz75,

Thank you for posting your feedback regarding the care your child received when they attended Bunbury ED following an accidental burn. I am pleased to hear that they are now recovering and that you received timely first aid and care when you attended the local hospital initially.

I wish to apologise that you were made to feel “palmed off” by the hospital prior to being transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital and that there was a delay to your transfer. Whilst it is true that our ED has been quite busy of late, this should never reflect in the care we provide for all of our patients. The Bunbury Hospital Emergency department is currently undergoing a significant redevelopment which will include increasing its capacity. However, I will also share your feedback with our staff in our meetings this week as a reminder to treat all our patients with compassion.

I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience further so we can ensure that we strive for better patient care in the future. Please feel free to contact me on 0447 793 904 at a time that is convenient to you to discuss further.

Kind regards,

Ceri Elliott
