I received exceptional care during my time with the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) midwife program (MGP5). I recently gave birth to my second child through this program and I believe having the continuity of care throughout, made for a positive birth and postpartum period.
My midwives were well aware of my medical history, my birthing history, my birth plan and my general mood. My main midwife, Caitlin, attended my appointments (along with my student midwife Jade) and also my birth. This was fantastic as she was able to set me up with what I specifically needed to have a positive birth experience. Having gone from a hectic first birth which left me in pain for weeks and birth trauma, I was able to experience a calm, positive and non-invasive second birth.
After leaving the hospital, I was supported daily via home-visits and text messages with my midwives. I received breastfeeding help and was given referrals to women's health professionals. I didn't experience the same anxiety and low mood as I did with my first and I contribute it to the fantastic care I received.
Based on my experience, I strongly believe this model of care should be the standard in the public hospital system and that I also believe it reduces the risk of postpartum depression and anxiety, and helps increase breastfeeding rates.
