"Communication is bad"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Aged Care Assessment Team, Geriatric Medicine & Ward 6D

(as a relative),

My elderly parent was admitted to FSH and was put in Ward 5A, then moved to ward 5B. They are in renal failure and we were advised by a dr that if my parent does not receive dialysis, they will not recover. We gave them permission to do the dialysis, my parent had also given permission in A& E.

Every time I call I either can't get through or the nurses can not give me any information. My parent has now been moved to ward 6D. I have been trying to contact this ward to find out what is going on and no one answers. We were advised that every time something happened (i.e. meds,  changed ward moves) we would be informed. We have not been informed about anything that is happening. In my experience, the communication in the hospital is absolutely terrible.

My other parent is an absolute mess as am I. I live 2 hrs away and they can't drive so they rely on me to take them everywhere. I have asked for my parent to be transferred to a hospital nearer where we live to make it easy on everyone. If they are not going to give my parent dialysis, I feel they need to be moved closer to home. We cannot get any information from anyone.

I have called and spoke to the family liaison officer and waiting for someone to call me back about what is happening with my parent. In my experience, the nursing staff are fantastic but it's the communication we are not getting from the medical professionals that is hard to take.

I feel something needs to be done about this. I know my parent is elderly and very ill but they are a person and a loved family member and in my opinion, it's just not good enough.

Dear izarmm68,

Thank you for reaching out to us via Care Opinion. I can hear the concern and frustration in your words and am very sorry that you have felt the communication has been absolutely terrible.

I do understand that since your post was published on Care Opinion, the Nurse Unit Manger (Dave) has been in contact with you and your parent’s treating Consultant has also spent time with you and your other parent regarding the plan and ongoing care. I also understand that Dave has provided you with his direct line should you have any more queries.

Thank you for drawing this to our attention and enabling us to improve our practices. I wish your parent all the very best in their care and treatment moving forward.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
