"Exceptional care at Royal Perth Hospital"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / Respiratory Medicine & Ward 9C

(as the patient),

In the afternoon of a Sunday, I was feeling poorly. I ended up presenting to a hospital near my home but I was refused entry. They suggested I go to Royal Perth Hospital. My story about that experience can be read here.

I quietly and slowly walked back to my car. I was careful not to get too worked up. I drove home not quite sure what to do. Afraid I might have an attack in the car on the way home. Afraid to go to another hospital in case I was turned away from that one as well. I arrived home, had a bath hoping the steam and warm water would calm me down, then I put myself to bed. But I couldn’t sleep. I was coughing up mucus, spluttering, wheezing and breathing with difficulty. I quickly reassessed my situation, changed clothes and drove myself to Royal Perth Hospital.

My plan was to tell them my story and I prayed they would listen and treat me

About an hour after arriving home, I went to that other hospital. Best decision I made. I was quickly triaged and put into a bed. Immediately I was relieved with Ventolin and steroids and with the kindness of the staff.

I was blood tested, covid tested and x-rayed. I felt I was in a professional caring health system. I was unwell but I was in safe hands - many hands.

I stayed in for twelve hours under observation and was discharged when I was, in their opinion, fit to go home the following morning. Unfortunately, some days later I had to be readmitted. I had developed a bacterial infection. I returned to the ED in the morning. They admitted me immediately and I stayed two nights.

After receiving exceptional care from a full range of people including doctors, specialists, nurses, phlebotomists, orderlies, radiographers, receptionists, caterers and cleaners, I recovered 😊🌻🌻

I’m home now on medications, resting and recuperating.
