I had a fantastic experience in the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) care at KEMH throughout my pregnancy and labour, which can be found here.
The only disappointment we had with the care at KEMH was on the post-natal ward where I stayed 1 night after birthing my baby. I found the care on the ward was less than attentive and not as friendly or supportive as our previous experiences while I was pregnant.
After giving birth when I checked into the ward late at night, I was then left alone to pump and told to set my own alarm to wake up for pumping 3hrs later (as my baby in NICU) without being properly shown how to use the pump and not even offered to help me in/out of bed.
The next day I asked to be wheelchaired down to see my baby in NICU but it seemed to me that the midwife was reluctant and suggested I walk even though I was still in a lot of pain from labour.
Later I pressed the call bell and nobody came for over half an hour.
Then I was told I was being discharged that afternoon even though my baby was still in NICU and I was still very immobile, however despite it being less convenient to visit my baby, I was actually happy to go home as I didn’t feel comfortable or supported on the ward during recovery. It was a real shame as I believe new mums recovering from birth deserve just as much if not more care as they had before birth.
