"Care"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

In the afternoon one recent weekend, I was stung by a cobbler and attended the Geraldton Regional Health Campus in response. The care I received during the emergency situation, I felt, was un-reciprocative of the amount of pain that I was in at that time.

I attended ED the next night as I was nauseous and could not swallow my pain meds or antibiotics which caused me to be in even more severe pain. I was under the impression the nurse had made an assumption I was trying to gain intravenous meds and in response, in my opinion, they chose to give me a subcutaneous injection into my abdomen, as a means of discouraging me to return to ED.

I had further pain and they also made a comment that I just need to learn to swallow my tablets, when I had communicated that I'd had this issue my whole life. Subsequently, one of the individuals who took me to the ED was an RN themselves who, I believe, noticed these mannerisms as well.

I left the emergency in the same amount of pain that I went in with, if not more. Two nights later, I was extremely overwhelmed and suffered a panic attack, for a multitude of reasons. However, I firmly believe that if my request to receive altered methods of pain relief had been fulfilled, this would not have occurred. Now I am extremely discouraged about returning to the emergency department at the Geraldton Regional Health Campus, even in an emergency as I believe that I will not receive proper care.

Dear septembermy95,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I really appreciate you taking the time to write to me regarding how you were cared for when you came to Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department after you were stung by a cobbler. It is a very painful injury and I do hope you are now fully recovered.

Communication is so very important between a patient and the health care worker caring for them. I want you to feel encouraged and safe to come to the hospital for care and I would really like the opportunity to talk to you so we can learn from your experience and do better. My role at the Hospital is Operations Manager at Geraldton Hospital and if you are happy to, please call me on 9956 2369 or via email at derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au.

I also wanted to tell you about Aishwarya’s Call and Response Early (CARE) call. This is a 1800 number that patients, like yourself, or their families and carers can call and raise concerns they might have about the healthcare they are receiving. Across all Midwest hospitals; including at Geraldton Hospital, the CARE call phone number is 1800 316 729.

Thank you again for writing about your experience at Geraldton Hospital. I will ensure your story is shared with the staff in Emergency Department so we can use this to learn and improve what we do.

Kind Regards,

Derek Fraser

Geraldton Hospital Operations Manager
