"Attending the hospital"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Outpatient Department (Eyes & General)

(as a relative),

I transport and attend appointments at the Sydney Eye Hospital Outpatients Department with my parent who is in their 90s and blind in one eye and has limited sight in the other.

The staff are respectful and courteous but the appointment times are given as a block booking and I find we are waiting for around four hours which is very stressful and tiring for an elderly person with a disability.

I would like to see more thought and compassion when these appointments are given as we have been attending for around 10 years and the situation has seemingly not improved.

Dear beidhf54,

Thank you for raising your concerns regarding your elderly parent’s clinic appointment times and the long time spent at each visit. I apologise for the distress this is causing your parent. Our aim is to provide a high standard of care and we are always receptive to patient/carer feedback to improve how we conduct our services and care that is compassionate and person-centred. Your parent’s experience has been shared with the OPD team. The department is currently working on improving the patient flow within the unit.

I also appreciate you acknowledging the staff professional behaviour.

Kind regards

Jon Magill

Director of Nursing and Support Services
