"Pain management with new doctor"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

The words "Patients Come First" and "Do No Harm" are proudly on display in this hospital! That is far from my experience! I have been a chronic pain sufferer for over 20 years, since a botched surgery at another hospital.

I went through 3 years of Multidiscipline treatments with different specialists and previous pain units. I have been through blind drug trials to find what worked best for my pain, I was trialed on so many different drugs over years. Finally, my doctors found a balance that worked for me, it worked for the last 20 years. No changes in dosage or strength and I was able to live a reasonable pain managed life. I worked, raised a family and functioned reasonably in life. Then this year, I get assigned a new doctor to my management because apparently, the doctor I had here for years had retired, is what I was told.

Without even a face to face appointment, this new doctor I believe, changed my medication because apparently it was no longer working. (it was still working fine) Then it was because of statistics I believe, but I've never been one of those statistics that has had any problems ever, in fact, I offered myself up for study! Then I believe it was because of the law, I feel that is also not true. When I did finally have a face to face consult with my new specialist and I told them that the medication they changed me to was causing terrible side effects to me, they asked what I would like them to do about it. I told them I just wanted my old medication back and that I had a letter from the lawmakers themselves that questioned why they changed me in the first instance. I recalled they told me they weren't interested in what I had from whoever I say it's from. I believe they wouldn't even read the letter that I had from the Federal Health Minister about my treatment. They just turned to me and said, as I recalled, too bad, get over it and learn to live with it.

I can no longer work, I have a great deal of pain and anxiety and am experiencing things that I have never had to deal with. So their whole "Patients Come First" and the doctors "Do No Harm" is, based on my experience, a joke at this hospital! In my opinion, you don't want to be treated at Sir Charles Gairdner Pain Management Unit! I believe they don't care!

Dear columbawc93,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding your recent experience of the Pain Management Clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I was very sorry to read that you have had such a challenging time with managing your chronic pain. I am sorry that you were left feeling as if the team was not listening to you and the concerns you had regarding changes to your medication.

The model of care for the SCGH Pain Clinic is to provide a multidisciplinary service to improve the functional recovery of our patients, rather than simply prescribing medication for the management of chronic pain. The team are committed to providing the best evidence-based care, which has evolved over the past several years as new evidence has become available. Current pain management best practice does not recommend the prescription of opioids for non-cancer-related chronic pain, based on evidence from research.

As part of our commitment to putting our patients first, we follow best practice evidence to make sure that we do not cause harm through healthcare. Your feedback is a reminder of the importance of understanding the impact that these changes of care can have on our patients and the need to explain to our patients the reasons why we are making these changes, particularly when they have been receiving treatment for a period of time.

We are committed to our multidisciplinary Pain Management model of care. We can review your concerns to ensure that your care is consistent with this best practice model if you wish to contact the SCGH Consumer Liaison Service on 6457 4441 to provide us with your contact details, as Care Opinion is an anonymous platform. If you want to access a second opinion, you can ask your GP to make a referral to another pain management service.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari

Executive Director, SCGOPHCG
