I had a horrific eye infection and couldn't get in to see a doctor due to conflicting priorities.
When I freed up some time I visited the ED in a small country hospital and was seen by a nurse practitioner. This was very fortunate because the nurse practitioner could prescribe antibiotics and advise me what to do the next day if they didn't work quickly enough overnight.
In seeing the nurse practitioner - it was fast and efficient, rather than a long wait in ED for an available Dr.
Nurse practitioners are in between a registered nurse and a Dr, so they can help to speed up the diagnosis and recovery. This helped to get the right treatment - I had to have intravenous antibiotics but, as I understand it, this helped to save my eye. Thank you -I believe Nurse Practitioners are really needed in our overcrowded EDs!
