"Feedback on experience"

About: Wheatbelt Regional Palliative Care

(as a relative),

My parent was an inpatient in a private rural aged care facility and was in their final days of struggle with dementia. It seemed to me that I was encouraged by an RN in the facility to sign a document referring my parent to the regional WACHS Palliative Care service in order to receive confirmation that my parent was getting the best palliative care possible, advice with anything else that we could be doing and emotional support for my family.

Our one encounter with this PC team we felt was so distressing that we regretted signing that form, and wanted nothing to do with them again. Unfortunately, as I understand it our rights were taken from us and I believe we were no longer allowed to have any further say in my parent's care.

We were completely disgusted by the interactions with the Palliative Care team. I felt that our concerns, questions and wishes were completely disregarded, even though I thought I had Legal Guardianship of my parent. It caused us an enormous amount of grief in an already distressing situation. After a few months it still causes me great pain to remember it.

Dear guideen38,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

I am so sorry to hear how you have been left feeling and I am saddened to think that we have added to your distress at what must be a very difficult time for you and your family. Please accept my sincere apologies that you were not able to receive the information and reassurance you were looking for from our team. I would like to assure you that this is not the level of the level of care we strive to deliver in our regional Palliative Care service.

I would like to explore your experience and your parent’s journey to learn and guide our staff in delivering more patient focused care in the future. I would really appreciate speaking with you and, if you would be willing, I encourage you to contact 08 9621 0724 or via email at: basil.paulose@health.wa.gov.au

I will also be sharing your feedback with our regional Palliative Care services team and ask them to reflect on what happened and how we can make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I do hope that we hear from you soon.

Warm Regards

Russell Colyer-Cockburn

A/Regional Director Wheatbelt
