"Delayed treatment for skin cancer"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

My spouse had an aggressive skin cancer, but I believe the surgeon at the hospital took too long to see them. Our GP had to write two letters to get in to the surgeons. In the meantime, while we waited for an appointment it was growing. They ended up cutting it out, and now my spouse has to have radiation so we have to live away from our home for about 5 weeks.

I don’t want to say it is a complaint, but it’s not good enough. If they had got to my spouse earlier, and I get that they are busy, but they said to see our GP, and now my spouse has to go through 28 shots of radiation. If they had got to my spouse earlier I feel this wouldn’t have gotten this far. Now they have to do treatment to cover a 5cm margin. I’m quite annoyed about it and so is my spouse.

Dear foxtrotzc73,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us.

I am very sorry to hear of your spouse’s diagnosis and how worrying this must be for you and your spouse, particularly as you need to be away from your loved ones and support networks while your spouse receives radiation treatment for skin cancer. I would also like to apologise for the understandable frustration that you and your spouse experienced in securing an appointment for treatment.

I would like to arrange a thorough review of your spouse’s care and treatment so that I can better understand what happened. So that I can do this, I would appreciate it if you could make contact with Scott Jones, who is the Operations Manager of Kalgoorlie Hospital. Please feel free to contact Scott on 9080 5817 or via email Scott.Jones2@health.wa.gov.au.

You may already be aware that the Cancer Council of WA has a range of practical and emotional support services and resources for people affected by cancer. If you would like to know more about what is available for you and your spouse, you can visit: www.cancerwa.asn.au

I would like to wish your spouse a quick and full recovery and hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Tredinnick
