"Treatment by the clinician"

About: Moora Health Service / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was presented to the Moora District Hospital in the early hours on a weekend a few months ago, arriving in an ambulance after being king hit and knocked out.

Upon the clinicians arrival I felt they did not seem very interested in touching me and I recall said, this is what happens when you people drink and get into fights. The police and ambos said they didn't know how many drinks I had, and I stated only a few. I recall the clinician then said, I can't do much for them cos they're only drunk and also made a comment about my weight. I did not present to the hospital because of my weight.

The police then proceeded to do the breathalyzer on my then gave me the reading of 0.02 (well under driving limit). Then the clinician, I believe, decided to treat me.

It seemed to me that the nursing staff and police were very annoyed at the clinician's response to me. The clinician then continued with their examination and kept me overnight for observation.

The following day the clinician attended my room and I recall said, I was told you come from a good family and that you work. I did not feel the need to respond as both the night before and morning after I feel I was judged (very inaccurately) by this point I left and did not want any further interactions with them.

As a follow up to my discharge I had to see the clinician at the surgery the following day. But it wasn't until my third visit over three days that I was sent for a head scan for my own reassurance.

I feel these kind of judgements and assumptions are unacceptable.

Dear marchrp45,

Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback concerning your recent presentation to Moora Hospital.

I was so sorry to read of your experience with the clinician involved in your care and treatment. It must have been a terrible ordeal for you after being knocked out.

You are absolutely right, there is no place for the comments and judgements made by the clinician and I was disheartened to read this as they do not reflect the WA Country Health Service values.

I understand you have received an apology from the General Practice. If you remain dissatisfied, please contact Dr Peter Barratt, Director Medical Services via email peter.barratt@health.wa.gov.au or mobile on 0427 198 657 who is more than happy to investigate and address your concerns further.

Please accept my sincere apologies and I hope you have made a full recovery.

With best wishes,

Regina Michel-Huessy

A/Regional Director Wheatbelt
