"Anaphylaxis"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently, we took our young child to the emergency department at Bunbury Regional Hospital. While I was parking the car, their other parent took them to triage. A staff member rushed them to the resus bay immediately before doing any assessments just based on how our child was, which I believe was obviously very unwell. I recall the staff member said our child needs adrenaline immediately.

When our child and their other parent got to resus bay the staff member went to a clinician who was checking equipment in that bay with a clipboard. I recall the staff member gave a handover to the clinician and said that our child needed adrenaline as they had been stung with a bee and wasn’t breathing properly. It seemed to me the clinician continued to check the equipment, did something on the computer and I recall said to the staff member they think our child needs adrenaline and then left.

I recall the staff member hurried away to find another clinician in ED and one of the other staff who attended. Adrenaline was charted and while we were both there it was administered. Our concern is that I felt our child was obviously unwell and in a very dangerous situation, and instead of taking notice to the situation and other staff member’s concern the clinician seemed disinterested in the situation and more focused on checking equipment than the actual presentation in front of them. This led to a large delay in the management of our child’s condition in my opinion.

Dear venuswc56

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

I am very sorry to hear that your child was unwell and they were rushed into Bunbury Hospital Emergency Department. What a frightening time this must have been for you and your partner.

I am very concerned to hear that you feel a clinical team member appeared ‘disinterested’ about your child’s care and I sincerely apologise for how this made you and your partner feel. I would like to assure you that kind of behaviour is not condoned or acceptable.

I would like to investigate your experience further, so if you feel comfortable in making contact with me, please call me on 0428 282 709.

I hope your child has now fully recovered and that we hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Amber Hargans
