"Consideration for my friend"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward Fiona Stanley Hospital / General Surgery Department & Ward 7A & Ward 7B

(as a friend),

I was visiting a patient friend of mine in the surgical ward, WACHS Bunbury. They had initially been admitted to, and held in, Surgical in Fiona Stanley Hospital. When no operating facilities i.e. surgical staff etc. were available, they were transferred by ambulance down to WACHS Bunbury, and placed in a surgical ward there for a day, pending removal of very painful stones in their bile ducts.

There was no operation able to be scheduled here either for whatever reason. It was then decided that my friend should be transported by ambulance, back to Perth to a different hospital. Being informed of this potential relocation, their spouse decided to drive to Perth to be close to that hospital.

Halfway to Perth, their spouse was told that they would not be taken to the other hospital, but would be kept in WACHS Bunbury until an expected surgical availability would be scheduled.

This whole saga started with my friend’s initial admission to FSH. I think that a patient presenting with the highly painful, and concomitant vomiting symptoms should have been treated in a more medically professional manner in my opinion, befitting the seriousness of the problem.

It seemed obvious that at all times the staff who attended them were sympathetic and cognizant of the serious nature of the patient's symptoms and the presenting health problem.

I take from this series of bungled procedure, notwithstanding that the staff in contact with the patient demonstrated a high standard of efficiency. However, I cannot support the fact that the systems within which the staff are operating, are in any way conducive to good health outcomes.

I have lived in third world countries, where it seemed to me the hospitals function at a higher level overall than I feel ours do here in Western Australia.

Dear intensityjn47,

Thank you for contacting Care Opinion to share your story.

I am sincerely sorry for your friend’s experience, it sounds like it would have been a confusing and upsetting time for them and their family, particularly when they were experiencing the symptoms you describe.

We are committed together with Bunbury Regional Hospital to better understand what has occurred and identify areas for improvement.

I encourage your friend to contact the Customer Liaison Officer at Bunbury Regional Hospital on 9722 1521 who is expecting their call. With your friend’s consent, Bunbury’s Customer Liaison Officer will liaise with our Patient and Family Liaison Service here at Fiona Stanley Hospital to investigate your friend’s experience and apply any learnings to avoid that scenario happening again.

Kind regards

Dear intensityjn47,

Thank you for speaking up on behalf of your friend, who appears to have quite a frustrating and confusing journey through our hospital system. This is not the experience we want anyone to have and are all very sorry that this has happened.

As Neil has said above, this issue involves both Fiona Stanley Hospital as well as our hospital, we have both agreed, with your friends permission, to work together on this, so that we can better understand how this situation could have occurred in the first place.

Would you please ask your friend to contact our Customer Liaison Officer on 9722 1521 so that we can begin looking into this further.

Thank you once again for sharing this story on Care Opinion. We hope to hear from your friend soon.

Kind Regards

Jeff Calver

Director of Bunbury Hospital
