"Support person for elderly patient"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Having brought my elderly parent in to ED for the second time (being told to return due to worsening symptoms), I have been advised I am not allowed into the hospital clinic with them despite them being forgetful and elderly and possibly not being able to describe all their symptoms accurately. My parent requested that I stay with them to assist discussing their health issue. They were in a lot of pain and quite visibly unsettled when advised I would not be allowed with them.

I understand there are concerns around Covid at this time however I find this unnecessary and possibly detrimental to my parent’s health and wellbeing. I was permitted to be with them when they were seen through ED and admitted to the short stay unit a couple days before, so am unsure what policy has changed in that time.

Dear decemberqn69,

Thanks for reaching out to us via Care Opinion, and for your understanding regarding the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation here in Perth.

I understand your concerns regarding your elderly parent, and am sorry about the situation you (and we all) are facing in terms of visitor restrictions. I am unclear which clinic you were not permitted to enter, thus find it difficult to provide you with an accurate response. In addition, without your parent’s details I am unable to look into the circumstances surrounding your access to be able to assist them.

Please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (6152 4013) as soon as you are able so that we can work with you to find an appropriate solution for you and your loved one.

The following link which provides information on current visitor restrictions (mandated across the State by government) may be of some help to you: COVID-19 Public hospital visitor guidelines (health.wa.gov.au).

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
