"Not so elective surgery"

(as the patient),

Like many, my 'elective' surgery was cancelled numerous times. I don't believe anyone elects to have unnecessary surgery in the public system. Anyway, during the most recent call to cancel, I expressed my growing concerns as it had now been about 4 years since my last review of a potentially life-threatening condition.

The patient service consultant from Central Gippsland Hospital listened to my concerns, showed a level of empathy and assured me she would speak with the Doctor. She did just that and I was booked in the next week.

Thank you for sharing your story. I am sorry that your surgery had to be re-scheduled a few times. The global pandemic is certainly being felt at all levels, and for hospitals, one of the requirements has been to decrease elective surgeries so that staff could be re-deployed to support COVID patients and services. Thank you for bearing with us.

The Patient Services Team has worked really hard to keep in touch with people like yourself. They are keen to provide enough information and support to help you to get through this challenging time. They will be pleased to hear that you found their approach empathetic and reassuring, as this is what they aspire to.
