"A phone call"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

I called Perth Children's Hospital, I found it was a lovely call, I wasn't asked if vaxed and found my child on file. I called again a couple of weeks later to confirm booking because of covid rises, this time was asked if vaxed, with my reply of no, they put me on hold a moment, came to phone and said sorry there is no record of my child at all for any type of surgery in this hospital, I said are they sure, they were sure. I wasn't satisfied so I called back next morning and wasn't asked about vax and wow they found my child no dramas.....How did I feel, discriminated!

I feel, because I'm not jabbed, the staff member was going to decide themselves if my child misses out on treatment, lucky for myself I didn't believe them and thought it was strange to be asked and made that call again. I’m disgusted to have been treated this way and would love an explanation, thank you.

Dear Discrimination

I am very sorry to hear of your recent experience and feeling discriminated against based on your vaccination status.

I have liaised with the Nurse Co-Director of the Surgical Directorate to discuss this further. While unvaccinated visitors must adhere to some additional health measures whilst at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH), I can assure you that care would not be withheld from any child based on their parent or carers' vaccination status.

Staff at PCH are aware of the protocols surrounding vaccination status and are expected to adhere to these accordingly. It is the responsibility of these staff to ascertain the vaccination status of all visitors, including parents. It appears in your case this question was ill-placed and subsequently led you to feel that your child would have care withheld as a result. Please accept our apologies for this.

I understand you have been in contact with the Consumer Engagement team recently regarding this experience. If you would like to receive more information specific to your case, I encourage you to contact the team on 6456 0032 to discuss further.

We wish you and your family all the very best.

Kind Regards,

Matthew Holmes
