"Foul wound care"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Presented to ED after sustaining a kick to the hand and arm from a cow. Had been working with cattle that day, was covered in cow poo, got kicked. Waiting in ED for easily about 4 hours for an X-ray on possible broken elbow and treatment on a fingernail that had been ripped 90% off. I as unable to clean myself up and wasn’t offered any help or supplies to do so, therefore spread cow poo all through the ED and hospital.

When I was eventually seen, I felt the radiologist was rough as guts forcing my arm into positions which I couldn’t do, the doctor removing my nail didn’t even wash my hand before injecting local anaesthetic blocks in- I was still covered in cow poo, dr then removes the nail - again no washing of the area, nurse then bandages it over- again no washing, they literally bandaged cow poo into an open wound and told me to leave it for at least a week.

I went to another dr the next day to have it changed, the first dr/nurse had used a gauze swab to dress the open wound which had dried and stuck like cement in the wound. Took the next dr about an hour to try and soak it off it was so badly stuck and incredibly painful to do, ripped the raw flesh off with it, as well as all the dirt and filth that had dried in with it. I felt lucky I was not stupid enough to leave a filthy, contaminated wound untouched for over a week!

Dear ScreenName123,

Thank you for posting your story about the treatment you received in our Emergency Department following the injury to your hand. At the outset let me offer our apologies for the treatment you describe, this was clearly sub-par.

We are keen to be able to investigate this matter fully in order to understand what occurred. To that end, if you were willing to provide me with your name and necessary contact details we will get in touch to discuss this matter fully. We are commencing a programme of care improvement across the organisation so being able to understand your story would greatly assist with the work. We expect to commence specifically in the ED shortly.

If you would like to contact me directly I can be reached either via email mark.dykgraaf@cghs.com.au or via telephone 03 5143 8319.

Kind Regards,

Mark Dykgraaf

Chief Executive Officer
