I had to have an iron infusion and my treatment was deplorable!
I told the clinician l was a fainter, that seemed to fluster them, they tried to raise the old bed to go up and it only raised the feet end!
The clinician propped me up with a pillow under my arm, said l was fainting, if I’d fallen forward l believe would have landed on the floor, if I’d fallen backwards l felt I would hit my head on the wall!
I said in the beginning that my left arm was the best arm.
The clinician stuck the needle in my arm, l screamed, I recall they hit something they shouldn’t, tried the right arm, no good there, goes back to the left arm, apparently when you faint your veins sink.
It seemed the clinician put the needle in properly this time but didn’t put the stopper in the line, their work trolley seemed to be a mile away from them. I recall blood everywhere; on the floor, all over me. Then I believe they proceeded to yell at the top of their voice that they’ve got a bleeder. Then l had a two other staff in with me!
I recall the clinician doing the infusion looks at the ampoules price and goes oh they better get every last drop of this. Between the 3 of them, they were clicking and clacking vials of saline through, l thought they better get that right as l didn’t want an air bubble to the heart.
After that, the initial clinician left and it was a different staff member that tried to clean me up!
I didn’t get escorted out of the hospital to make sure l was okay!
I got to my parent’s car and they asked if I’d been in the operating room as my shirt was covered in blood!
That was the most traumatic experience I’ve had in a long time!
