After two weeks of my baby having a low grade temperature and not being able to get a face-to-face doctor appointment, I made the decision to take them into Kalgoorlie Health Campus Emergency Department as their heart rate had become very rapid.

After triage and our RATs, we were immediately taken through to a treatment room. We were then seen by an absolutely wonderful doctor who not only took down all relevant information and history but made sure that I was doing OK as well. We were then seen by a nurse who administered Panadol and Nurofen and sat with me for a while and had a little chat to ensure that I was doing OK, she also showed me a few tricks to administering medication which was greatly appreciated.

We were referred straight to paediatrics and had a paediatric doctor attend to us while still in ED. It was then decided that blood tests were required, and a cannula would have to be placed. Inserting a cannula in a baby is definitely traumatic and stressful however the doctors and nurses involved were all amazing and did everything possible to make both of us as comfortable as possible.

After the tests the decision was made to admit my baby until the results were known. At this stage I was completely relieved as I felt I knew that my baby was now in the best place possible.

We finally got an answer and treatment commenced, and almost immediately we had our bubbly baby back. We spent a couple of nights in the children's ward and every doctor, nurse, and patient services officer we dealt with were so professional, understanding, and caring. Being the only parent allowed in for the duration is extremely difficult however having such supportive nurses attending definitely made it easier.

I am so grateful for everyone that was involved in my baby’s care.

Thank you for taking the time to share your most positive feedback about our staff in the Kalgoorlie Hospital Emergency Department (ED) and Children’s Ward (CW). ED and CW work closely together to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for their patients and their families, this is evident in your positive feedback of your experience.

In the present environment of “living with COVID” there have been extra protocols put in place to help protect our consumers and staff. One of those protocols you have mentioned in your story, RAT testing; it is encouraging to see that this requirement did not slow the access or administration of your baby’s treatment.

I feel for you as it is very confronting watching a “littlie” have a cannular inserted. It always amazes me how someone so small requires so many “big” people to insert these important clinical devises. I am proud to hear that our staff made you feel safe, supported and comfortable during this experience and during your time at the hospital.

Thank you again for sharing your story and for the gratitude you have shown towards the doctors and nurses involved in your baby’s care. I trust your baby is well on the road and recovery and continues to bring joy and happiness to your family’s lives.
