"Presenting to theatre for plastic surgery"

About: St Vincent's Hospital

(as the patient),

Procedure to excise Squamous Cell Carcinoma was down for a set day a few months ago. On being prepped for the operation the lead surgeon in the Recovery Room prior to surgery intervened, asking me when the last biopsy was taken. Dr Vlad was concerned that any underlying problem might have been missed. The tumour on my shin hadn't been eradicated with topical application of either Efudix or Aldara. He sent me home with the promise of carrying out surgery promptly when biopsy was known. I then had the excision carried out a week later.

I was impressed in the way Dr Vlad intervened, postponing the operation to thoroughly examine reasons why the medication hadn't been successful.

I was hospitalized for 6 days with a Vacuum Bandage attached to the surgical site. The Surgical Team, when engaging with me on their daily rounds, seemed a little abrupt. I had trouble attaching names to faces so their contact was threadbare.

On being discharged the Community Nurse attended to me three times a week. I have nothing but praise in their attention to detail as the wound and donor site are recovering well.
