"Delayed surgery for collar bone fracture"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department Box Hill Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

My child sustained a severe fracture of their collarbone and on arrival at Box Hill they were seen immediately and were x-rayed within 15 mins of us arriving at the hospital. The staff were all fantastic in caring for my child and in letting us know that they would require surgery. Unfortunately though as there were no theatres available for surgery, we have had to bring our child home with no additional pain relief and told that they may need to wait up to 10 days for their surgery.

In the meantime our child is sitting at home in agony, unable to do anything or attend school while they nervously wait for their surgery. The staff at the hospital apologised to us for the delays in my child having surgery, however they have been unable to provide us with any other updates as to when they will receive surgery. A very scary and worrying time!

Dear velazb37,

Thank you for providing your feedback on Care Opinion. Firstly can I acknowledge that there is sometimes a wait for surgery such as that required by your child. We are working as quickly as we can to undertake all of the required surgery and I apologise for the delay in this case.

I am most concerned that your child is at home without pain relief and would like to follow that up for you. In order to do so can I please request that you contact one of the Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience, either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au. If you choose to call, please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so, you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

With regards

Gayle Smith
