"Pregnant partner with type 2 diabetes and COVID positive"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Maternity, Labour Ward, Nursery and Level 2 Care Nursery

(as a service user),

Rockingham hospital. I was 27 weeks pregnant, type 2 diabetes and Covid positive. After being told to urgently get to hospital via health direct due to complications and serious concerns for health of myself and baby, I arrived to be placed in a very cold tent even though I told your staff I'm covid positive. Then placed in a separate area where I recall there was no toilet, no water, no staff and no beds available. My blood sugars were low. I waited for 2 hours and in that time observations were not carried out, we were put aside and told there were no beds. I was distressed, in pain and could not sit up any longer.

In my opinion, disgusting how a pregnant lady with many underlying conditions was seemingly left. I was still very very ill, had bronchitis and fever and tell me; where do I go now, sit at home with no help, no information, no care, no support. Based on my experience, absolutely disgusting lack of care and support offered by the medical system.

Dear Jokeofasystem,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent experience at the Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) Emergency Department (ED). I am very sorry to hear that you waited a long time to be seen and receive care. It sounds like it was a stressful experience and an upsetting time for you. Our ED aims to see and treat all patients as soon as practically possible, at times if there are a high number of presentations or a life threatening emergency which requires care by multiple doctors and nurses, some patients may wait longer to be seen. I apologise for the prolonged wait time you experienced and for any discomfort this may have caused.

In order to prevent transmission of COVID to other patients RGH ED has designated areas to see and treat COVID positive patients. Usually patients who advise they are COVID positive are directed through to the appropriate waiting area so I am unsure why you were placed in the tent. We are currently working on improving the heating in the tent area to improve the comfort of our patients.

RGH ED is committed to providing compassionate, quality care and we are working hard to reduce delays for patients and we appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve how we deliver care. In order for us to further investigate the reasons for the delay and the care you received I would encourage you to contact our consumer liaison officers on 9599 4323.

I hope that you are feeling better and that your pregnancy is progressing well.

Kind regards,

Kath Smith
