"COVID-19 RAT process"

About: Albany Health Campus

(as a relative),

When I arrive at the hospital, it seems there is no explanation of the 'check in process' to visit your loved one. No simple poster explaining the steps for how you visit your loved ones- do you get a RAT, how many visitors are allowed etc. Further, I feel visiting hours are short, only 2hrs, but I recall the RAT process for us didn't start until after 5:15pm, we weren't tested until 5:20pm. Limiting visiting times even further therefore we didn't see our loved one until 5:40pm. This made our experience visiting a loved one confusing and more stressful than it needed to be. Our family would appreciate more and clearer communication and the RAT testing process commencing at 4:45pm, allowing us to use the entire allotment of visiting time.

Dear gammagf75,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of the current public hospital visitor guideline. We are always grateful for feedback from our community as it helps us to identify areas for improvement or celebrate when things go well. I am very sorry for the impact that this guideline has had on you and your family and that you have found the signage insufficient to describe the process. We will review the signage as a result of your feedback.

The intention of the current visitor restrictions and screening is to protect the most vulnerable members in our community, patients in hospital, and to preserve the healthcare workforce, whilst allowing people to support their loved ones during a difficult time. Whilst the COVID-19 Visitor Guideline for WA Public Hospital and Health Services applies to all public hospitals in the state we are able to be flexible and consider individual circumstances in exceptional situations.

Managing a hospital during a pandemic is complicated however it is always our intention to put the needs of our patients and their family or carers first. Please contact me, Jenny Thompson, on 0428 758 213 should you require further information so we ensure that your visit with your family member is well supported.

Yours sincerely

Jenny Thompson
