"Mystery pain"

About: Esperance Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented to the ED with 6/10 abdominal pain which was impacting on my ability to walk. After the Dr reviewed me, I recall they didn't think it was anything that required calling in the radiologist for. I begged for an ultrasound and they ended up giving me a referral to the private clinic and I paid for it myself. I painfully walked to the ultrasound and back and was told that there was a 4cm mass and apparently it was nothing to worry about. On my return, I felt I was laughed at by another staff member when they asked about my pain, I recall them saying pfft, certainly doesn't seem that bad, and then I requested pain relief multiple times which I never received just a script to hopefully be able to fill as it seemed I was discharged with no reason for the pain...

Long story short, lucky I knew my body and drove to Kalgoorlie Hospital where it was found that I was having an internal haemorrhage resulting in emergency surgery, haemoglobin level of 50, 3 blood transfusions and a week in ICU.

Dear pictornd66

I am very concerned and disappointed to read your story and I can only imagine how traumatic this experience must have been for you. I am so sorry that you were left to travel to Kalgoorlie where you underwent emergency surgery and a week-long admission in the intensive care unit. I sincerely apologise for the lack of care and compassion you describe and I am so sorry that you were not listened to and felt dismissed by staff. This is not at all reflective of the care and compassion we expect from our staff when they are caring for sick and vulnerable patients and I am very sorry on behalf of everyone involved.

I would like to reassure you that I will share your story with our clinical teams so that they are aware what happened so that what happened to you does not happen to anyone else.

If you would like us to follow up specifically with the clinicians involved in your care or if you would like to discuss your concerns further, I encourage you to please contact Dr Annette Hackett, who is the Senior Medical Practitioner at the Esperance Health Campus on 9079 8000 or via email at: Annette.Hackett@health.wa.gov.au

If, in the future, you are concerned about the healthcare you or a loved one is receiving, we have an escalation process in place at the Esperance Health Campus (EHC), which supports patients and their families and carers to call for assistance. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and it enables you to speak to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one if you feel that your healthcare concerns are not being addressed appropriately. Information about Aishwarya’s CARE Call is in place throughout EHC so that people are aware of the process. If you are concerned about the care you or a loved one is receiving in hospital in the future, the Aishwaryra’s CARE Call number is (08) 9080 5781.

I really appreciate the time you have taken to share your experience with us. I am sure it was neither easy to write and or relive. I do hope you are feeling better and making a good recovery.

Your sincerely

Peter Tredinnick
