"Birthing at KEMH under the MGP4 program"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my beautiful daughter in August 2021. I was fortunate enough to have my first birthing experience through MGP4 and it was only pure luck that I happened to be pulled into this program without referral. Furthermore, I had actually planned to go through my pregnancy and birthing journey through the private system, however due to being just out of the insurance waiting period, ended up under the care of MGP4. I’m so glad that these things worked out the way they did because I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience for what was one of the most intense times of my life.

The continuity of care, genuine kindness of the staff, detailed education and thorough follow up care and resources were beyond what I expected. There wasn’t a single midwife, doctor, student nurse or support staff member that made me feel uncomfortable at any point from the initial appointments to the days after birth. Even during unpredictable turns of events, I never once felt doubtful about the capabilities or care of the staff.

Special thanks to Lolita and Carissa, the lovely midwives who laid the foundations for an informed and stress free pregnancy journey, as well as excellent aftercare. Also special thanks to Mel who stepped in to assist me through the labour process which surprised my husband and I two weeks early and turned out to be a much longer process than anticipated! I also wanted to pass on my thanks to the doctor (I think her name was Kelly) who had the most lovely bedside manner, with such a kind and consultative approach to patient care.

Post birth I also utilised the services of the Breastfeeding Centre of WA and feel fortunate that this service (amongst many others) are so readily available to guide new mothers through what can be challenging and daunting new experiences.

After having such a positive experience under the MGP4 program at KEMH, I would happily come back to use the services of MGP4 again in the future based on this experience.
