"Emergency department"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I was taken to ED a few weeks back feeling very sick, could hardly walk and they had to get me a wheelchair, the nurse did a wonderful job.

Once the clinician came and saw me, I recall they kept getting me to repeat stuff and I was that sick I didn’t have the energy to do this. Then I requested they call my specialist in Perth as I had recently had surgery, response was they don’t have a number, I got my partner to give them the number. I believe they called but didn’t leave a message I later found out from my doc he had no idea I had been in ED or anything.

They kept saying it was anxiety, but once speaking to my doc a few days later, it seemed it was medication reaction post surgery.

I felt like I was not listened to at all by the clinicians.

Dear Boulder99

Thank you for taking the time to post a story about the care you received recently in our Emergency Department (ED) at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus.

I am glad that you felt you were well cared for by the nursing staff but am disappointed you did not feel listened to by your treating doctor.

I know it can be exhausting and frustrating to have to repeat your history, especially when you are feeling sick and tired. Sometimes this can be avoided but at other times it is necessary for the treating team to ensure they have confirmed all the relevant details or to make sure that nothing has changed. As well as reminding the team about the need for clear and compassionate communication, I will also follow up to ensure that the necessary summaries are being submitted following attendance at the ED or discharge from the ward, so that other treating doctors are aware of presentations to our services.

I hope you are now recovering well.

Kind regards
