"Presenting with sepsis"

About: Jurien Bay Health Centre St John Ambulance WA

(as a service user),

My husband had recently been to JHC for a procedure by a urologist. He was post op 6 days and at home in the country 200+kms away from Perth, when he developed signs of infection. He had rigors, elevated temperature, sweating and was rugged up as he felt cold. I took him to the local Jurien Bay Health Centre whereby the nursing staff did a wonderful job of assisting, assessing and treating him ASAP....Thank you so much.

Triaged accordingly, and the ETS Dr came on the video screen to consult with my husband and I. My husband was administered IV antibiotics, pain relief, another hospital notified and an ambulance arranged. By this stage it was late at night. If there wasn’t an ambulance available, then I was going to drive him to the other hospital. Thankfully the volunteer ambulance officers from Cervantes took the job, as with sepsis it takes hold rapidly and you can die from it. It is unfortunate that Jurien Bay does not have enough volunteer ambulance officers that will cover all call outs night and day. I believe it is a very busy area and I feel it is time the ambos were contracted as employees and paid accordingly.

My husband is extremely grateful to the professional service provided by the Cervantes crew. Thank you. He would have deteriorated significantly if he had to wait till morning for an ambulance!

Dear Frog23

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback concerning your husband’s recent presentation to Jurien Bay Health Centre.

I was very pleased to read that our nurses provided a high level of care and treatment; working together with our Emergency Telehealth Service team (ETS) and St John Ambulance to get the best outcome for your husband.

I have passed on your gratitude to our ETS and to the Regional Manager for St John's Ambulance who will ensure the Cervantes volunteers receive your uplifting words of appreciation.

We are always looking at ways to improve patient transport service for Jurien Bay in conjunction with St John Ambulance (SJA).

Sharing uplifting stories such as yours does go a long way to ensure SJA volunteers are acknowledged for the great work they do and hopefully encourage more volunteers to participate in this vital community service.

I hope your husband is making a full recovery.

Best wishes

Trenton Greive
