"Cardiology Outpatient Appointment"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Cardiovascular Medicine

(as a relative),

I accompanied my spouse to a cardiology outpatient appointment recently. To my distress, I needed to assist them via a prolonged entry to their appointment. In the context of their compromised cardiac condition, they became breathless, anxious and agitated. I am a NMHS Nurse Manager and totally appreciate the need to channel people via a COVID managed system to protect the compromised patient cohort. I had to walk my spouse the long way around and then could not exit the shortest way out. 3 days post their appointment and at the time of writing this, my spouse is still fatigued, breathless and distressed that they had to walk such a distance to their outpatient appointment. Can we please rethink our processes.

Dear waltzfb75

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on how we can improve access to Outpatient appointments at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). I am very sorry to read about the distress that you and your spouse experienced during a cardiology appointment.

We are very appreciative of receiving feedback from consumers so that we can continually strive to improve our patients experience when accessing services.

In response to the increasing rates of COVID-19 transmission in the community, on 3 March 2022 the State announced the health system was moving into alert level Red. This direction initiated a higher level of restrictions and strict protocols for implementation throughout the Hospital.

These strict guidelines have been put in place across all health care facilities in the State and are necessary to ensure our most vulnerable patients and staff remain safe and to protect everyone in the community, whilst the State experiences very high case numbers.

Our executive and clinical team are working closely alongside the SCGOPHCG Emergency Management Service to monitor the situation and are awaiting further advice from the Chief Health Officer to guide our next steps.

You might also be interested in taking advantage of the QEII Medical Centre Buggy Service to get around the site more easily. Patients and visitors can call 0481 438 731, or hail one of the volunteer drivers and ask for a ride.

Should you wish to discuss these issues in more detail, I would encourage you to contact the SCGOPHCG Consumer Liaison Service (CLS) on (08) 6457 2867

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
