"Asthma attack"

About: Hedland Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I am providing feedback on the care my child received at Hedland Health Campus ED and the way in which my child and I were spoken to by one of your nurses.

My child, who had suffered an asthma attack was told by your nurse that their response of a 10 pain scale wasn’t right and they can’t be a 10 because they'd be on the floor in pain.

When I advised that I had not given my child paracetamol or ibuprofen that day, I felt your nurse snapped at me and advised me that I should be giving pain relief before coming here so they can give my child something stronger.

Given that my child had an asthma attack and ibuprofen is not advised in asthmatics, I believed it was better to have their breathing assessed by a medical officer in a hospital setting before administering pain relief.

I found the way that your ED staff speak with patients is atrocious, in my opinion - not even mentioning that it seemed there is no privacy and everyone can hear what you are going through because your nurse is constantly saying they'll need to speak up.

Dear wearinged45,

I am sorry to hear about your recent visit to the Emergency Department at Hedland Health Campus and thank you for taking the time to share your story. I hope that your child has recovered from the asthma attack and is on the road to recovery.

I would like to address the communication issues you encountered and I am sorry that you and your child experienced these during your attendance. We expect all staff to be respectful, objective and compassionate when dealing with patients, families and colleagues.

With regard to the current area for triage, another option has been identified to ensure patients can be assessed privately and ensure staff safety also. The Clinical Nurse Manager in ED is in the process of reviewing this option.

Thank you again for bringing these matters to my attention. I would like to discuss this further with you, if possible and encourage you to contact me on 91741038 or Louise.Steedman@health.wa.gov.au.

Warm Regards

Louise Steedman

Operations Manager

East Pilbara
