"Labour and birth"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was transferred to Bunbury due to meconium in my waters. The doctor came in as soon as I had been pushing for an hour and told me the baby was having decels and we needed to do a vacuum extraction (the papers I got at discharge listed maternal exhaustion as the reason not this). I was basically crowing at this point.

I feel that I should have been offered to change positions or given extra time which possibly could have lowered the amount of tearing I experienced and possibly lowered my blood loss. Due to the vacuum my baby had high CRP levels and was taken to the nursery to be put on antibiotics. If I was given more time to birth, I believe our baby most likely wouldn’t have needed this and wouldn’t have been taken off me.

This was incredibly distressing to me and my partner as our baby was completely healthy and we couldn’t take them home. Once our baby was discharged from the special care nursery they requested we room in for a night. We requested to be transferred back to our local hospital but were denied due to our baby needing monitoring over night.

One set of obs was done when we got to our room and one set when our baby was discharged the next morning which easily could have been done at our local hospital. I felt like my birth was treated as something I couldn’t do on my own and one intervention kept leading to more which, in my opinion, all could have been prevented if someone had simply suggested I try pushing on my side or hands and knees.

Dear taurusjh68,

Thankyou for taking the time to share your experience at Bunbury maternity. The birth of a baby is such a memorable occasion and the maternity unit team are truly sorry that you did not receive the care that you were expecting and that we added to the anxiety you were already experiencing associated with your transfer into our service.

I also apologise for the breakdown in communication and information provided by the staff. Clear and concise information should have been provided by the Obstetric and Paediatric team to enable you to understand the reasons behind their recommendations of care, and importantly to involve you and your partner in the decision making process.

My name is Katrina Jones and I am the Clinical Midwifery manager of the Unit. I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience with you to learn more about what happened, and to ensure that I can provide clear feedback to the staff members involved in your care. If you feel that it would be of benefit, I can also arrange for you to have a meeting with the staff involved to discuss and debrief the events of your admission in Bunbury.

Please feel free to contact me via email on katrina.jones2@health.wa.gov.au or call me at a time that is convenient to you on 0418 913 555. I look forward to hearing from you.

Katrina

Dear taurusjh68,

I wish to thank you again for your feedback. We all process traumatic experiences differently and recognise that you may not wish or be ready to discuss your feedback in person. I therefore wished to ensure you were aware of the many resources available if you feel that you require further support to work through your birth experiences. COPE: Centre of Perinatal Excellence www.cope.org.au and PANDA panda.org.au are both excellent online resources.

If you haven’t already connected with the child health service, please do so and they too can assist with resources and support if needed. My contact details are as above, and please feel free at any stage to email or call and I will be more than happy to discuss your feedback.

I wish you and your family well. Take care.
