"Collapsed nose"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / ENT

(as a service user),

I had been attending SCGH ENT Department as I have a collapsed nose which causes nasal obstruction. Due to a car crash back about 8 years ago. After a few years of back and forwards with this Dept…SCGH ENT Surgeon operated to fix my deviated septum but not my collapsed nose. In which I was under the assumption that both would be done. This never happened. As I believe the surgeon was hoping that I would be given the funds from the car crash claim to do the operation but the insurance did not payout. And I was left with the issue of the collapsed nose. Given the time I have been waiting, I feel I should never been put as a category three for this.

I would further add that when I mentioned to SCGH ENT a few months ago about referring me to another hospital it seemed they quickly acted to that request. But the other hospital have me as a category three. And the wait time for the operation I recall is between two to three years. In my opinion, the system really needs to be monitored correctly on how they put patients into these categories. My GP has written a letter requesting to RPH about this. At the time of writing this, I have not heard anything as yet. Only a letter in the post from the other hospital that I am a category three.

Why did I wait so long for anything to be done at SCGH ENT and I felt like I was getting completely dismissed by this Department and not treated fairly. Also if you look at the amount of time and cost going backwards and forwards, I believe it shows complete inconsistent medical care on how to seemingly diagnose and treat a patient correctly. Also I would like to add, I was sent for a sleep study, question is why. When the issue is about my collapsed nose and giving me nasal sprays that I found never worked. Like I said, backwards and forwards.

Dear turkeygr53

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) department. I can understand your frustrations and apologise that your experience has left you feeling completely dismissed and not treated fairly. Being in a car crash and requiring facial surgery must have been a frightening and challenging time for you.

I am pleased to hear that you were referred to another hospital quickly, though, and glad you have been in touch with your GP to query the waitlist category.

ENT is a specialty that attracts a large volume of referrals for SCGH and we take great care to prioritise patients based on the clinical urgency of their condition. At times we are unable to provide treatment as quickly as we would like due to the large number of referrals we receive. When this occurs, it is important that patients maintain contact with their GP, as you have done, especially if symptoms worsen or new symptoms arise.

I hope you are able to get a date for your surgery soon. If you would like to speak to someone about the reason you were referred for a sleep study, please contact the SCGOPHCG Consumer Liaison Service (CLS) on (08) 6457 2867 or via email: CLS@health.wa.gov.au

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham

Hi,

The response was not that helpful. The reality here is that it seems to me I will have to wait 7 years to get a collapsed nose operation here in WA. The standard of the system here is a national disgrace, in my opinion.

Nothing changes until a change is made.
