My parent was taken to SCGH hospital by ambulance last month. Emergency department provided good and prompt care before being admitted. My parent was taken to observation ward pending availability of a bed. Was later taken to a ward.
Whilst in hospital, a number of issues where highlighted that I believe need to be improved.
It took a very long time for medications to be charted (over 12 hours) and then administered to the patient. These medications were crucial to patient's health, which I believe contributed to the patient's deterioration. Furthermore, one medication was not available and this was not conveyed to the family for many days, neither patient or family were aware of this. Need for greater transparency and I believe the hospital should have been able to source.
Lastly, the hospital failed to provide a diet suitable for patient's condition. A diabetic needs a diabetic diet and not the standard diet given to everybody. It seems the rationale is that sugars will spike and then we give them quick acting insulin constantly jabbing patient. It seems like common sense to provide a suitable diet especially as diabetes is a very common and serious disease. This aspect was extremely disappointing.
"Delayed medication and lack of diabetic meals"
