"Delayed medication and lack of diabetic meals"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Acute General Medicine Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Geriatric, Acute and Rehabilitation Medicine (GARM)

(as a relative),

My parent was taken to SCGH hospital by ambulance last month. Emergency department provided good and prompt care before being admitted. My parent was taken to observation ward pending availability of a bed. Was later taken to a ward.

Whilst in hospital, a number of issues where highlighted that I believe need to be improved.

It took a very long time for medications to be charted (over 12 hours) and then administered to the patient. These medications were crucial to patient's health, which I believe contributed to the patient's deterioration. Furthermore, one medication was not available and this was not conveyed to the family for many days, neither patient or family were aware of this. Need for greater transparency and I believe the hospital should have been able to source.

Lastly, the hospital failed to provide a diet suitable for patient's condition. A diabetic needs a diabetic diet and not the standard diet given to everybody. It seems the rationale is that sugars will spike and then we give them quick acting insulin constantly jabbing patient. It seems like common sense to provide a suitable diet especially as diabetes is a very common and serious disease. This aspect was extremely disappointing.

Dear bravopq95,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experience during your parent’s admission to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, as well as sharing your concerns about delayed medication and lack of diabetic meals. It was very kind of you to mention the good and prompt care that they received in the Emergency Department.

I was concerned to hear of the perceived delay in the administration of medications and your belief that this may have contributed to your parent’s deterioration and would like to investigate this further. I would encourage you to contact the SCGOPHCG Consumer Liaison Service (CLS) on (08) 6457 2867 so we can review your parents care.

I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the lack of diabetic meals offered. I agree, diabetes is a common and serious disease and it is especially important if patients have diabetes during their hospital admission that they are on the appropriate diet. Our regular menu caters for most people in hospital including patients with diabetes and is in accordance with the Nutrition Standards for Adult Inpatients in WA Hospitals. Patients can choose from suitable options from the menu each day, I’m sorry to hear that this was not your experience.

Once again thank you for your feedback. I hope that you parent is recovering well,

Kind regards,

Chris Cullen
