"Maternity care"

About: Sale Hospital / Women's and Children's

(as the patient),

I had a very traumatic birthing experience at the Sale hospital. From the moment I stepped into the hospital for my induction, I felt I was not taken care of properly.

It seemed to me that most of the midwives did not have my best interests at heart and I believe they made decisions for me that did not benefit me. I felt I was spoken to condescendingly during my labor and I wasn’t listened to. After having my baby, the postpartum care was seemingly non-existent.

I had no help learning how to breastfeed my baby. I was in a lot of pain from an emergency c section and the midwives missed multiple doses of my medication which only made the pain worse. I had no help caring for my baby during this time.

I was still in pain when I was sent home from the hospital. I believe no one checked me out properly despite me asking multiple times and I had to be back in hospital two days later with an infection. Again, I had no help caring for my baby although being in immense pain.

The whole experience was very traumatic. I feel upset and frustrated that I wasn’t taken care of properly during my experience.

Dear hawkjk33,

My name is Mandy Pusmucans and I am the Director of Nursing at Sale Hospital.

Thank you for sharing your story, particularly one so personal and for you, traumatic. I sincerely apologise that this has been your experience. This is not reflective of the excellent care that we strive to deliver to our community.

As a team, we will reflect on your story and consider how we might improve. The Senior Midwifery Team will do this at their weekly meeting; as will our Maternity Services Leadership Committee, which has been reviewing all aspects of maternity care. The feedback from community members is so important to this work.

If you feel able to talk further about your experience, I would really appreciate you contacting me on phone 5142 8512 or by email at mandy.pusmucans@cghs.com.au.

I do hope that life is going well now, for you and your family. And again, thank you for sharing this very personal story.

Kind regards,

Mandy

Dear hawkjk33

My name is Kim and I am one of the Nurse Unit Managers in our Women’s and Children's Unit.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to share your story, and I am extremely sorry that your experience was not a positive one. It is evident through your story that we have failed to provide you and your baby with the care that you felt you needed.

I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about your experience, as this will allow me to understand it more, and provide opportunity for further investigation with our team.

Your feedback is valued and helps us make changes to support the provision of optimal care. As a team, we have recently developed a charter that will support the delivery of excellent care into the future.

If you feel comfortable doing so, please contact me at wac.num@cghs.com.au or on 5143 8730. I sincerely hope that you are recovering well and enjoying time with your new baby.

Kind Regards

Kim
