"Poor experiences"

About: Alpine Health GPs in the Indi Electoral District

(as the patient),

I attended my local medical centre and saw a doctor mid last year who I have seen a couple of times since then and have had poor experiences every time. I saw them for an unrelated medical matter and they went on what I felt was a rant about using certain products and made me feel awful. They weren’t who I usually saw at the hospital so I wasn’t too concerned.

I then attended hospital in mid 2021. Like most patients in this situation I was feeling really worried about it. This doctor didn’t make any eye contact with me or introduce themself, I felt like beef on a plate. I’ve been in and out of hospital heaps and have never felt like that before, I reckon the nurses and doctors deserve gold medals for what they do. But this doctor was really rough when they put the needles in for the cannula. I felt they were rude and never addressed me, I found the experience quite traumatic.

I then had to return earlier this year. My treating doctor, another doctor, was great and all the nurses were good, but same situation as before and this time the initial doctor had a medical student or registrar with them. The doctor never addressed me or introduced either of them. I was feeling really vulnerable and quite unwell from being dehydrated from the preparation I needed to take for the treatment. My arm was blue – they tried heaps of times to find a vein in one arm despite me telling them it was hurting, I felt they ignored me. They then tried the other arm, as soon as the needle went in I had excruciating pain. I complained to them how much it hurt and I recall was told that it was just as traumatic for us, as it was for you.

I still have pain in my arm and I feel like I don’t want to go back.

I would like to know why this doctor treated me this way, why they seemingly dislike me so much to be so harsh and lack any compassion. I’m worried what next time will be like.

I also wanted to let you know shortly after my treatment I contacted my medical centre and asked to speak to the doctor to discuss what happened to me and I never had a response back.

It’s important to note this is just one person but they made me feel very uneasy about the whole system.

Dear funnymn98,

Thank you for the feedback and taking the time to write about your poor experience. We are truly sorry to hear of this awful experience and apologize for the lack of communication and pain that occurred whilst you were in hospital.

If you are still experiencing pain in your arm we would encourage you to go and see your doctor to review your arm. We have spoken to the relevant doctors and nurses who are regretful that you had this experience. Our aim is to make sure this does not happen again. Also if we can be of assistance to provide feedback to the medical centre for a response to your concerns please let us know via email at tanya.hart@alpinehealth.org.au.

Thank you again for your feedback as it enables improvements to our health service to be put into action and prevent another experience such as yours.

Kind regards,

Tanya Hart
