"Attend Ed with child after motorcycle accident"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child had a motorcycle accident at an event recently. We attended the ED department with persistent right shoulder pain, after a couple of hours waiting in pain my child was taken around to get x-rayed and they came back to the waiting room for another couple hours. We were take in the kitchenette in Ed and told that my child didn’t have any fractures and to go home and take pain killers and if not better by the day after tomorrow make appointment to see the GP for a referral for an ultrasound.

Following day my child had chest pain, took them to the chiropractor for an adjustment and the chiropractor wrote a referral for ultrasound. My child had that a week later and showed full thickness tear of the supraspinatus tendon with background temdinopathy and retraction of approximately 17mm & was recommended to have an MRI.

3 weeks after the accident my child had an MRI which revealed complete tears of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus & the subscaularis with retraction. Subluxed biceps, impaction injury with impaction fracture at the anterior aspect of the numeral head. Tear of the anterior band of the IGHL, fluid, debris within the joint space.

My child is now waiting 4 weeks later to see a surgeon, this should have been operated on in the first week, but no this doctor was seemingly more concerned about getting them out of their hair then ordering a ultrasound on the night.

In my opinion, this is not good enough, I believe my child should be recovering from surgery not waiting for to see a surgeon.

Dear Frog27

My name is Dr Ramesh and I am the Interim Director of Medical Services at Central Gippsland Health.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. It is troubling to read of your experience in our Emergency Department and we take note of the issues you have outlined in relation to the treatment of your child’s injury following a motorcycle accident.

Patient feedback is very important to us and we would find great value in undertaking a review of your child’s presentation, the treating decisions made, and the reasoning behind them. We want to ensure that your feedback informs and shapes what we do, and how we do it, moving forward.

If you felt comfortable making contact with me to provide further information, I can be reached at Nadarajah.ramesh@cghs.com.au or on (03) 5143 8700. This would also enable us to discuss any additional supports we may be able to provide you and your child during their recovery.

With best wishes

Dr Ramesh
