"Disappointed in ED care"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Having always been an advocate of the Wonthaggi Hospital, I would like to express my extreme disappointment and dissatisfaction with our recent experience with the Emergency Department. My infant grandchild was taken to the ED on three separate occasions over a weekend. They were coughing, having trouble breathing and had not been drinking or eating over this time. My grandchild was becoming increasingly distressed and their parents were at a loss as to how to help them. They were examined and sent home each time. On the last visit the doctor even questioned why they had brought my grandchild there. At the suggestion of a local GP and as a last resort they took them to another hospital where my grandchild was examined, x rayed, diagnosed and admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia and dehydration.

I understand Wonthaggi does not take in children but surely if the staff are not qualified to deal with infants, I believe they should refer them on to a facility that does. Surely the children and parents of Bass Coast deserve and need better than this in my opinion.

Dear deltabg64,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your important feedback.

I am very sorry that your family had this experience and I completely understand your disappointment. I wonder if you would call or text me on 0472846355 so that I can get your grandchild’s details, and facilitate a review of their presentations.

Whilst our inpatient facilities do not yet have Paediatric capability, our Emergency Department does, and it would be our expectation that they do exactly what the other hospital did – a good assessment and instigate immediate treatment.

It is very helpful for us to hear back from our community when things don’t go as well as they should, because it is an important way for our teams to improve. I hope you will call or text so that we can ensure this experience isn’t replicated in the future.

Kindest Regards,

Jan

Dear deltabg64,

Thank you so much for making contact with me. I have passed your details on to our ED Leadership team (Dan and Fiona) and they will be in contact with you later this week. We appreciate your follow-up with us which will help us prevent your experience happening again in the future.

Kind Regards,

Jan
