"Oncology Unit closed"

About: Swan Hill District Hospital / Chemotherapy Service

(as the patient),

Due to no staff to run this unit it had to be closed until staff can be trained to reopen again. We now travel 80kms to another hospital for Chemotherapy where I'm there as a patient in the Oncology Unit for about 3hrs. My partner takes me as I'm not well enough to drive myself after having Chemotherapy. So they have to find something to do whilst there all that time.

The nurses at Swan Hill were wondering kind caring and very professional at their job. In my opinion, the unit in Swan Hill is very tiny, dark and not very appealing, looking at the walls and outdated and only has 3 chairs.

Oncology at the other hospital has x6 chairs we can see outside the room it is lovely and bright with photos of oncology patients on the walls and lovely sayings to keep us positive and strong.

The nurses are lovely, kind, caring and make you feel at ease as soon as you walk through the door. It's a pleasant place to be when we have to sit in the chair to have our treatment for hours.

Tea, coffee, cold drinks and sandwiches and scones provided for morning tea.

lt would be lovely when and if Swan Hill reopens, that they visit the other hospital to see what they offer and the pleasant bright room we get to sit in. Instead of looking at walls for hours like we do in Swan Hill. In my opinion, they need to make their Oncology Unit more appealing.

Dear whisperyn53,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience and share your feedback. I think that we all agree that the room where the chemotherapy is provided is not at all appealing here at Swan Hill and this is really challenging given how limited we are for space. I would also agree that the other health service where you have been diverted to for the interim period has a different type of oncology unit with a view and bright pleasant room, with scones as well- that is a very hard act to follow!

We are working really hard to be able to start the service up again here at Swan Hill and I apologise that you are currently having to drive for your treatment. I will continue to work with the nursing team here to look at ways to brighten the treatment space up for the patients here.

Thank you for your feedback

Kind Regards

Chloe
