My son suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder. He complained about pain in his eye and a feeling that there was "something stuck in it".
We could not get an immediate appointment with our family GP because they are so overworked and the last local bulk-billing clinic closed some months ago.
In desperation, I took him to the Sydney Eye Hospital. The service there was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. We were told upfront that the hospital was very busy and that we would face a wait of 3 to 6 hours, which is what I expected. We saw a Triage Nurse immediately and another nurse examined and tested my son's eyes within the hour. We were told that his condition did not require immediate treatment, but that we still needed to see a doctor. We were kept up to date about our place in the queue and the staff were unfailingly kind and empathetic about my son's distress.
We finally saw a Senior Resident doctor who listened to my son very patiently and then explained his condition in terms that he could understand. He was diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis and the reason why he felt something was stuck in his eye was explained to him, even though this was not the case.
We completed our consultation three-and-a-half hours after we entered the Emergency Department. I was very impressed that everything we were told during our visit was true and accurate. Both the medical and the administrative staff were patient and empathetic toward my son.
I cannot rate the quality of the service which my son received highly enough and I am very grateful.
