"Pain relief and care"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I broke my ankle recently and have a 5mm gap between a bone fragment and where that bone fragment was supposed to be. I was sent home from ED with no pain killers and advice to use panadol which has done absolutely nothing for my condition. I had been in agony all night and not able to sleep and struggled with severe pain the following day. I contacted ED as the Dr. previously suggested I do to ask if they could prescribe me painkillers and was informed that I need to return to ED to be 'reevaluated'. I spent 5 hours in ED "Fast track" how am I supposed to cope with sitting in ED for probably more than this when I am in agony. Eastern health is doing accreditation right now so I'd think would be providing patient centred care. In my opinion, apparently not. Based on my experience, God help me if I am sick or injured and in severe pain- the treatment here I feel is dismissive and callous. It seems to me what a joke.

Dear IndelibleK,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience having attended the Emergency Department at Eastern Health Box Hill. I'm sorry it was not a positive one and that you felt your care was not up to the expected standard. I'd also like to apologise you didn't receive medications that would manage the pain from your fractured ankle.

As your feedback raises a number of questions and concerns, and in order for us to follow up your particular circumstances, I would like to invite you to contact one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au.

If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

I hope we hear from you soon and importantly that the treatment needed to fix your ankle either has occurred or is well progressed.

Kind regards,

David
