"Children needing help"

About: Midwest Health

(as a parent/guardian),

I have a teenager, that's falling through the cracks everywhere, it's so bad it's crazy.

I will go with this year's fun and games. We started the year trying to get appointment for paediatrics, to be told they won't give my teen a referral to the hospital because by the time it gets through they will be too old... so got one for Dockatela, but had to wait months for my teen to be old enough.

After waiting months to be told they can't help my teen, they need to see paediatrics. Back to local doctors, but they are too old for paediatrics now, after more time more running around to get an appointment with paediatrics at Geraldton hospital. We thought thank got some help, we first appointment I was kicked out five mins in so they could talk to my teen alone, they doesn't do well with opening up to strangers, out come nothing.

Second visit with information sent in from private OT and physiological, for pediatric doctor to say that the information provided is not good and disregard... So out come go home and try to get into a normal sleep pattern... Come back in a month, wells it's now been over two and still no follow up nothing. Teen still struggling with everyday stuff. Struggling to leave the house, still no friends. This kid has been through so many doctors, including mental health over the years and we are still chasing our tails.

In our experience, anything medical in Geraldton takes years to get no where... Months for any appointments from standard doctors even longer for anything else, and help for mental health is worse than nothing, it just sends us backwards every time.

Dear Dolphinshelcat

Thank you for contacting us on Care Opinion.

I was concerned to read of the challenges you’ve encountered accessing care and support for your child. I would like to apologise that we have been so far unable to assist your child with the treatment they require.

I appreciate how frustrating it would be not being included in your child’s consultation and to have input from private specialists dismissed. These concerns have been raised with the Paediatric Head of Department to review and discuss with their team, so they can reflect on how valuable information from carers and private health professionals can best be used to form the best care plan for a child.

I would be grateful if you would consider speaking with me, so I can listen to your child’s story in more detail and assist in coordinating the treatment they need. My name is Jody Rolston, Regional Manager Patient Safety & Quality. You can call me on 9956 2217, or you can email me Jody.rolston@health.wa.gov.au

I hope that I hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Jody Rolston
