"Child birth"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Maternity Unit, Childbirth & Parenting Education

(as the patient),

My first baby was born recently at Busselton Hospital via c-section.

Positives:
- Husband was able to sleep in a double hospital bed with me the first night, and in a recliner next to my bed in the birth suite on the second night.

- Overall hospital staff were kind, and baby delivered safely in the end.

Negatives:

- First epidural was not effective / did not work. Difficult to convince the nurse on duty that it wasn't working (especially during contractions). The

anaesthetist was contacted again, and seemed annoyed at having to return to re-administer the epidural. This time the epidural relieved me of pain for several hours before again wearing off. I tried to communicate that it had worn off but felt I was not believed. I attempted to give birth with severe pain in my lower back/bottom for hours. Eventually I was given a c-section. As the epidural site was still not effective in relieving pain, I was given a spinal block which provided relief immediately.

- My husband also asked for sterile water injections to relieve the lower back pain I was in. Through contractions a nurse asked if I wanted them and that they would hurt, and provide maybe an hour of relief. I was struggling to make decisions / respond and focused on the mention of more pain. I thought I had already given permission along with my husband but was continued to be asked through contractions. In the end I received no injections which frustrated my husband seeing me in pain.

- Felt as though nurse was losing their patience with me, especially as I had a hyperventilating / panic breathing occurrence during back pain contraction. This was a difficult first birth experience.

Dear recentbirth1,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on the birth of your first baby. And I would like to thank you for taking time to share your experience on Care opinion.

I am sorry to read about your disappointment regarding the level of professional support you received. To read that you did not feel supported by your midwife is disappointing and is certainly not within our professional behaviour values.

I am also sorry to hear that your experience and support with your choice and request for analgesia was not respected regarding receiving sterile water injections and that your Epidural was not effective. Unfortunately, this can sometimes be the case with epidural therapy, however this should have been approached with empathy and support from our team. The anaesthetist and pain team do also review all women having had an epidural and I hope you had the opportunity to discuss your experience with them.

I would like you to know that your experience is taken seriously and I am more than happy for you to contact me on 0897536131 or by email karen.swallow2@health.com.au to discuss further.

I wish you and your family well, and again thank you for sharing your story and hope to hear from you soon,

With warm regards,

Karen Swallow Clinical Midwifery Manager. Busselton
