I visited Collie Hospital a few months ago. In attendance was the treating clinician and a University Student. Whilst the actual procedure was absolutely fine, I had to witness the awful treatment of the student by the clinician. I believe they spoke to the student in a highly derogatory way. I felt I could visibly see how uncomfortable and shaken the young student was, when questioned by their mentor. I felt so bad for the young student. I wanted to say something to the clinician, but didn't think it was my place. I kept thinking that if that was my child and they were treated this way, I would be so upset. I felt their language mocked the student for not being quick enough with an answer to their questions. In my opinion, the clinician certainly did not support them, guide them or encourage them in any way during the whole procedure. I have university students, on prac, in my workplace constantly. Whilst some are better than others, they are all there to learn and need support, not apparent ridicule, from those in mentoring positions. I went home and couldn't shake off my unease of the situation I witnessed. I then decided to contact the Hospital and inform them of my experience. My complaint was received with respect and I felt supported by the hospital administration. I have always had only positive experiences when visiting Collie Hospital. I hope that by sharing my story, young people wanting to work in the health industry are supported respectfully and appropriately.
