About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I running to emergency for my child they got really bad pain in their stomach.. the lady in reception was so helpful and so care about my child specially they were so crying.

15 minutes later the nurse called my child and they started to do their job and they asking my child how they're feeling , who told the nurse they is on bad pain, it’s 9 of 10 pain , the nurse takes us to children department, and so sorry to say that but the worst time started, they ask me to set down on chair and then no one even ask about anything.

After 45 minutes I went to nurse to tell them please help my child and they came with another nurse and gave my child liquid medicine , after 20 minutes my child got pain again and told me they can’t set down and they tried to set in the floor I asked the nurse to get blanket to my child, and they started shouting with, in my opinion, a bad attitude and said I can’t give you blanket because my child is sleeping on the floor.

I explained my child is on the pain , the nurse said everyone on the pain and there is no bed available for my child, are you understand? That’s what the nurse said , that was one and a half hours later. I told the nurse when can the doctor see my child, they said we have a list once the doctor got my child's name they going to see my child.

Unfortunately because I need the doctor, so I can confirm they are sitting on the room with their phone and during that time they checked only 2 cases and this cases came after my child which I feel is mean unfair, I told that for the nurse and they said this our job and we can see who got priority.

I don’t know how the knows about my child pain , they even didn’t check my child. I feel I can confirm the nurse had a issue with me and my child I think they was really in bad attitude for no reason, all this and still my child on the same pain , half hour later , I back to nurse to ask when can the doctor see my child? they said we still have 5 children before my child, I asked do you know what the doctor can see my child? , they said I can’t give you time.

I asked nurse to leave because that’s unfair, exactly they said you free to go and we are sorry we can’t give you any medicine, I didn’t ask for the medicine by the way. And then I asked them where I can get complain they said you can go back to reception they can help you with that .

I believe they gave me impression they really don’t care a bout the complain , look they try to say do it ( it’s nothing) . I never get that before. But I can confirm that was really bad , I took my child to home with the same pain and just gave them some panadol . I am really disappointed from what happened, I think this department need investigation about theses doctors just sitting down playing with phone , you can check they got 2 cases in 2 hours

End of that I really can’t imagine this bad service in Australia , I believe there is something wrong. Please I need to follow up my complain specially that happened with kids, and my serious problem is my child still on pain and I can’t take them there z that bad feeling.

Dear cafees37,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding the recent presentation of your child to St George Hospital Emergency Department (ED).

I am disheartened to hear of the experience you and your child had in our ED. The communication issues that you describe will be presented to the Nurse Manager and the Head of Department of the ED.

The wait time you experienced is unfortunate and can occur when the ED is experiencing a large volume of patients.

Your observation of the medical staff using their mobile phones reflects the integral role that mobiles play in interdepartmental communication and aiding the efficient provision of medical care.

You mentioned that your child is still unwell. You are most welcome to present again to our ED if you feel medical care is needed.

I would like to follow up your concerns in more detail and would appreciate if you could please make contact with our Patient Experience Manager on (02) 9113-1111.

Once again, thank you for providing your feedback to us. I wish you and your family all the very best.

Kind Regards,

Ange Karooz

General Manager
